Attribution connects observed touchpoints to outcomes under a chosen rule. It does not automatically prove which touchpoint caused the outcome or what would have happened otherwise.
Separate three kinds of statement
- Observed: analytics recorded a tagged session or a platform reported a conversion.
- Attributed: a model assigned some credit under a rule such as last click or data-driven attribution.
- Incremental: a credible comparison indicates the outcome would not otherwise have occurred.
These statements require different evidence. A last-click report may help compare tagged paths; it cannot by itself establish incrementality. A platform-reported conversion may use a different window or identity model than the CRM.
Make the report interpretable
State the attribution model, lookback window, reporting source, conversion definition, deduplication rule, and missing-data limitations. Distinguish a contact click from a message, and a placed COD order from a delivered retained order. If a user crosses devices or private channels, the path may be incomplete.
For a budget decision, triangulate: tagged analytics, platform reporting, CRM or order records, and where feasible a holdout or controlled comparison. Do not add incompatible totals together. If evidence conflicts, show the range or competing explanations instead of selecting the number that favors the campaign.
A useful attribution report helps a team ask what to investigate next; it does not turn uncertainty into a single “true” source.
Optional AI-assisted work brief — Attribution explanation builder
For each reported channel result, state the tracking method, attribution rule, window, cross-device or consent gaps, offline reconciliation, and plausible alternative explanations. Use language proportional to the evidence: associated, attributed under a rule, or experimentally incremental. Rewrite causal claims that the data cannot support.
Worked example — Rewrite the causal sentence
Unsupported: “Instagram generated 30 sales.” Better: “Analytics attributed 30 recorded purchases to Instagram under a seven-day click rule; cross-device and offline purchases may be missing.” If a holdout experiment was not run, do not call the number incremental. The second sentence preserves the useful observation and makes the measurement boundary visible.
