Test Video Openings Without Rewriting the Whole Ad

Isolate the opening while keeping audience, offer and placement stable enough to compare.

A video opening earns the next second by making the viewer understand the situation. Test it without changing the offer, proof, audience, or placement at the same time.

Run an opening-only comparison

Keep the body and ending identical. Create openings that express different hypotheses: name the problem, show the result of a task, or ask a specific question. Avoid a curiosity hook that the video never resolves.

Same service, three openings (illustrative):

  • Problem: “Your WhatsApp button gets clicks, but are messages reaching the team?”
  • Demonstration: Show the click, editable draft, and sent message in sequence.
  • Question: “What should happen after someone taps ‘contact us’?”

The rest of the video should explain one answer, show the same evidence, and offer the same next step. Use the same audience and comparable delivery conditions, and label versions so the team can identify them.

Read attention and comprehension separately

Compare the platform’s early-view retention with completion, but also ask whether viewers understood the promised point. A strong opening may attract people who leave when the body does not match it. Review comments or a small comprehension check; do not infer understanding from a view count.

Use a pre-agreed observation window and sufficient delivery for the decision you need. If the variants receive very different audiences or spend, mark the result inconclusive. Record the next question the test answers, not merely the “winner.”
