Choose between search and social by the buyer’s current state. Search can meet a stated need; social can help people notice or understand an offer. Neither channel is automatically cheaper or better.
Match the channel to the job
Ask whether the audience is already expressing intent, whether the offer needs demonstration, how much explanation is required, and what evidence can identify a qualified outcome. Then compare the route:
- Search: useful when a query clearly names a task or solution. Check query coverage, competition, and whether the landing page answers the query.
- Social: useful when a relevant audience can be reached with a demonstrable idea or useful story. Check attention, audience fit, and whether the next step is clear.
- Both: possible when social creates awareness and search captures later demand, but attribution may not connect the visits reliably.
For a home-maintenance service, a person searching “AC repair near me” may need availability now; a short video showing how to recognize a clogged filter may serve an earlier learning task. These are different promises and should not share a misleading landing page.
Compare on the same business outcome
Set comparable definitions for qualified request, cost, response, booking, and completed service. Account for response capacity, market, and time window. Do not compare a social click to a search-generated completed booking. If measurement is weak, run a bounded test and label its conclusion provisional.
Optional AI-assisted work brief — Demand versus discovery selector
Compare audience intent, urgency, query evidence, creative proof, reach constraints, economics, and follow-up readiness. Recommend search for existing explicit demand only when query and service fit are verified; recommend social discovery when education or demonstration is needed and follow-up can handle it. Build a small test for uncertain cases and define how results will be compared fairly.
Worked example — Match channel to current demand
For an urgent query with clear service eligibility, search can meet existing demand. For an unfamiliar service that needs demonstration, social video may create understanding before a search happens. If neither has follow-up capacity, repair operations first. Compare channels on a shared outcome and time window while acknowledging different roles in discovery and capture.
