A channel is a way to change a specific constraint in the customer journey. Choosing one because it is popular skips the diagnosis and makes activity look like progress.
Diagnose the constraint before selecting a channel
Use the latest reliable evidence to locate the weakest transition:
- Few relevant people arrive: test discovery and audience reach.
- People arrive but cannot explain the offer: fix message clarity and proof.
- They understand but do not act: inspect price, eligibility, friction, and trust.
- They act but are not served: fix routing, capacity, or response ownership.
- The business result is unknown: repair measurement before optimizing a channel.
Only then ask which channel can change that transition. Search may capture existing intent; social may introduce an offer or demonstrate a process; email may support an opted-in relationship; a sales conversation may resolve a complex decision. These are possible roles, not universal rules.
Run a bottleneck review
Bring one journey report, a small sample of user questions, and the people who own each handoff. State the suspected constraint, evidence, alternative explanation, and the smallest test that would distinguish them. For example, low booking completion could mean form friction, limited appointment availability, or an unclear promise; each calls for a different intervention.
Set a decision date, budget or effort cap, success evidence, and guardrail before running the test. Do not add channels until you know what will change and how you will observe it. If the evidence is weak, label the diagnosis provisional.
Optional AI-assisted work brief — Channel choice decision tree
First define the audience and the outcome. Ask whether demand is already expressed in search, needs creation or education, depends on trusted recommendation, or is constrained after contact. Match the channel to that mechanism, then specify one inexpensive test and evidence that would falsify the choice. Include team capacity and service geography. Do not select a channel from popularity alone.
Worked scenario — Choose by mechanism
If buyers already search for an urgent service, search ads can intercept explicit intent—but only if eligibility and response are ready. If the audience does not yet understand the problem, a demonstrated video or educational post may do the discovery work. If inquiries go unanswered, neither channel repairs the bottleneck. State the mechanism, minimum test, and evidence that would change the recommendation.
